Mercury retrograde

The dates

Times are Eastern. A station is the moment Mercury's apparent motion reverses. The calendar date is the same across the United States. These stations are computed from the same class of ephemeris professional software uses. They are not a mood.

Astrologers also mark a shadow: the days Mercury spends crossing the same degrees before and after the loop. For the current one, that span runs from about October 4 to November 30, 2026. A shadow is a degree, not a deadline. People argue about how much it matters. The station dates are the part everyone can check.

What retrograde actually is

Mercury does not turn around. It is the innermost planet, and it laps Earth. For a few weeks, three times most years, the geometry of that faster orbit makes Mercury look, from here, as if it has slowed, stopped, and slipped backward against the stars. Then it appears to stop again and resume its usual direction. Those two stops are the stations. The backward-looking stretch between them is the retrograde.

The same trick happens with any planet farther in or farther out than Earth. Mercury's version is the famous one because Mercury is the traditional ruler of messages, routes, errands, and agreements, and because it happens often enough to have a reputation. The reputation got ahead of the astronomy. The loop is real. The panic attached to it is a story people added.

Scorpio, this time

Scorpio is a fixed water sign, ruled in the old system by Mars. This retrograde stays inside Scorpio from the first station to the second. That is a fact about where Mercury is, not a sentence on your month. Tradition reads Scorpio as the part of the chart that deals with what is shared, owed, private, or unfinished. A Mercury loop there is a reason to reread a contract, a password, a medical form, a conversation you left half-said. It is not a reason to decide the month is cursed.

Mercury also rules Gemini and Virgo. If your chart has planets there, or your Sun or rising is Scorpio, you will see more horoscopes aimed at you this month. What people blame on it

Lost emails, late trains, a signature on the wrong line, a text you wish you had not sent. Some of that clusters in these weeks because people are looking for it, and some of it is ordinary life, which misplaces things in every season. The useful part of the tradition is modest. These are decent weeks to confirm twice, to finish a thing you already started, and to let a first draft sit overnight. They are poor weeks to treat as a ban on living.

Foretold will not tell you to put off a wedding, a lease, or a resignation because Mercury is retrograde. That is fake urgency wearing an old symbol. The choice stays yours. Foresight, not fate. If a decision is ready, the sky does not get a veto. If a decision is sloppy, the sky is not why.

The next one

After November 13, 2026, Mercury moves direct in Scorpio and spends the rest of the year in its usual apparent direction. The next retrograde begins February 9, 2027, at 12:36 p.m. Eastern, near 6° Pisces. It backs into Aquarius before the direct station and stations direct on March 3, 2027, at 7:32 a.m. Eastern, near 21° Aquarius. Unlike the Scorpio loop, that one changes signs. Pisces and Aquarius are not the same reading, and a page that pretends they are is guessing.

Two more follow in 2027: June 10 to July 4, from Cancer back into Gemini, and October 7 to October 28, from Scorpio back into Libra. This page states them so it is still true after the current window closes. The paragraph at the top is the one to rewrite when February arrives. The explanation of the loop does not expire.
