Decision Tarot Spread
Updated
A decision tarot spread is five cards for a real fork. Option A, option B, where A leads, where B leads, and the fact you are not weighing. You name the two options before the shuffle. The button deals them in this browser. The fifth card does the work. The choice stays in your hands.
Write the fork before you touch a card
A decision has two doors you could walk through on a date you can say. "Stay at this job or take the other offer" is a decision if both offers exist. "Be brave or be afraid" is not a decision. It is a mood with costumes. If you cannot describe both options to a friend in one sentence each, stop and write them down. The cards get worse when the question is fog.
This is not the yes or no page. One card is a lean toward a single closed act. Five cards are a comparison. People use a yes or no draw on a fork because they want the shorter pain. The shorter draw hides the fifth card, and the fifth card is why they were stuck.
Why the fifth card is the spread
The first four cards will cooperate with whatever story you walked in with. A looks noble. B looks safe. Or the reverse. You can always find a gloss that agrees. The fifth card is the one you did not put on the table: the child, the debt, the person you have not told, the status you would lose, the boredom you are calling peace. The reading app on this site uses the same fifth seat, "what you are not weighing," because a fork that ignores it is theater.
The Lovers, when it lands anywhere in this spread, is two goods and one choice. Holding both is the option that fails. It is not a valentine. Two of Swords is the peace you keep by not looking. If that card is your fifth, the decision has been delayed by a blindfold you are calling calm.
The shuffle is Fisher-Yates from the browser's cryptographic source, as the methodology describes. Share the draw if you want a second pair of eyes on the fifth card, not on the option you already preferred. The tarot reading writes the letter.
Two Sundays, and the bill you forgot
An illustration. The fork is whether to spend the next season finishing a book or taking a class that would make the book easier and later. Not a client.
Option A, the book, is the Eight of Pentacles. Head down, chisel in hand, finished coins hung on the post one at a time. The least glamorous card in the deck and the most reliable. The road is the bench. Head down. One page at a time. It is not glamorous, and it is the actual work.
Option B, the class, is the Three of Pentacles. The mason on his bench, the architect and the patron leaning in over the plan. Three people who each need the other two. Other people, a plan on the table, skill witnessed. The road is real too. It is not a dodge unless you use it as one.
Where the book leads is the Nine of Pentacles. Alone in her own garden with a hooded falcon on her wrist, entirely content. Discipline paid for this. Solitude by preference is not isolation. A finished thing in a garden you paid for yourself. Solitude by preference. The lead is pride you can stand in, and fewer witnesses.
Where the class leads is the Six of Wands. The laurel, in public, on a horse. You won. That is not the same as being arrogant about it, and shortening the story helps nobody. A public mark. You learned, and someone saw it. The lead is recognition. Recognition is not the same as the book existing.
What you are not weighing is the Ten of Wands. Ten staves carried at once, town in sight, view completely blocked by the load. He picked up every one of them himself. You already carry both. The season does not have room for the bench and the class and the rest of the load you picked up yourself. The fifth card says the fork is partly a load problem. Drop a stave before you pick a road, or either road fails for a reason you refused to count.
That is a decision reading. It did not pick the book. It showed the bench, the classroom, the garden, the public mark, and the staves already in your arms. You still have to choose, and you have to put something down.
After the fifth card, touch one door
Leave the cards in the order you drew them. Read the fifth aloud before you restack the first four into a speech. Then pick a door that is smaller than the whole life. Not "I choose the book forever." "I give the book the next ten mornings, and the class waits." A decision spread fails when it becomes a personality test. It works when the next week looks different depending on which door you touched.
Tell one person the fifth card in ordinary words. If you cannot, the omission is still in charge. If they argue with your favorite option, that is not the cards failing. That is the point of saying it outside your own head. You may still choose against them. You may not pretend you weighed what you hid.
How to use a fork, not a verdict
How does a decision tarot spread work?
Name two real options before you shuffle. The first card is option A. The second is option B. The third is where A leads if you take it. The fourth is where B leads. The fifth is what you are not weighing, which is usually the card that matters.
Is this the same as yes or no tarot?
No. Yes or no is one card and a lean, for a closed action. A decision spread is for two live options that both have a cost. If you only have one option and a mood, you do not have a decision yet. You have a wish and a delay.
What if I have more than two options?
Pick the two you would actually do this month. A third option that exists only to keep you from choosing is not in the spread. You can run the spread again later with a different pair. You may not run it tonight because the fifth card was uncomfortable.
Which card matters most?
The fifth. Options flatter you. Consequences can be narrated. The fact you left off the scale is the one you already know and have not put in the sentence. Read it before you reread the prettier cards.
Can the cards choose for me?
No. They can show the shape of each road and the omission. The morning you act is still yours. If you wanted a machine to pick, you wanted relief from responsibility. This deck does not sell that.
